I had a Nelson’s Sparrow in Beehunter, 5S this morning. It was in a slightly drier area west of the levy (not directly in the cattails). These are rough coordinates for where the bird was: 39.01275° N, 87.11502° W. If you look at the pin on the map, you will see a wavy curved area of water, and the pin is just west of that. If you were walking on the levy, the levy will be just on the east side of that wavy curved area of water. The bird was just west of the water and just north of where the water bends back to the west if you are coming up from the south. I placed the pin after I saw the bird so the coordinates are not exact but should be a very rough estimation. If you are walking anywhere near the Waters edge, beware that there can be some deeper muddy areas. I was wearing muck boots and never got any deeper than Metcalf so I was fine from that standpoint. I did not extensively search for LeConte’ sparrows. The area east of the main road at the far north end near the parking area has significantly taller grass than it’s had the last couple of years and the path to the pond has not been mowed. If you decide to walk through the grasses, I found that a great trick is to wear rain gear as it helps to keep you dry from the dew as well as keep seeds from sticking to you, etc.
