On the beach with many Ring-billed Gulls. Smaller than the RBGUs, thin-bodied, blackish bill longer than RBGU, mantle darker gray. Wings mostly mottled brown but some coverts have been replaced with gray feathers similar in shade to the mantle. Nape, sides of neck, back of head and auriculars grayish brown. Crown mottled gray and white, forehead whitish. Breast mottled gray with white, belly mostly white with some gray mottling. Wings very long, primaries black lacking white tips. Tail blackish with partial white tip. Black smudge around eye with prominent white eye arcs above and below.
