iPhone photo, held out the car window on a brief stop. This bird is not counted in this list. I suspect it's the mate of the live one, as it wasn't very far away.

Three hours after my initial observation of these birds, I returned and found the adult still standing erect in the road, this time at the TN-bound edge. There was enough shoulder for me to pull off onto, from which I took a photo with a long lens. While doing so, two motorcycles zipped by in the other lane; the bird didn't react at all. So I stepped out with my camera, thinking to get a better photo, but as soon as it saw me get out, it turned around, ducked its head down to the ground, stretched out its neck, and scampered across the road like a race turtle. I heard sounds from that far side of the road that suggested the chick was still over there, but I saw no more sign of the birds, so I slowly made my way back onto the road. I continued going slow for a brief stretch, thankful for no other vehicles, because I remembered seeing a dark lump in the middle of the road on my way out three hours prior. Sure enough, it was what was likely the bird's mate, and I also saw a dead chick in the road. Not a good place for these birds to be hanging out, and I had to just hope they figured out soon that the mate wasn't going to wake up and join them again. Too sad.
