Bird was loafing with waterfowl in a seasonal freshwater wetland. I don't see this species in freshwater here in winter very often. Longish pale yellow bill, flatish head. Pale earpatch that contrasted with darker crown and hindneck. Larger and longer-necked than the Horned Grebe that it was near.
