I wasn't expecting this bird at the lake first thing in the morning. And it was not the main focus of our trip. I had seen that the bird took off previously several days before and my first thought was FRGU. I was with 2 birders from South Carolina who are very familiar with the bird and he called the bird right away. We both have seen this species a lot. I went over field marks to rule out Franklin's. It was a much larger gull with a longer slightly drooped bill which are usually good field marks for this species. There were eye crescents but I had to look closer to see them. Not thick like Franklin's . The bill was a dark red. It was not a lifer for any of us, or a state bird for me, so we moved on to the other birds. By the time we got around the lake searching for the Snowy Plover, we noticed the gull had taken off. I checked later reports and noticed no one else had seen the bird for the day so I'm glad I took the cell phone pics. Was it the same one or a different LAGU? That I don't know.
