Continuing, wintering from 10/27/23; discovered by Ashley H. Thanks again, Ashley!! :)) Warbler with a mixture, resembling a – 1) Yellow-rumped Warbler (Audubon’s) – grayish-blue upperparts that are more apparent/darker now than back in October; yellow patch on the crown; yellow on the throat that’s narrow without extending past its auriculars like in a Mrytle’s; yellow rump patch and on its sides; dark, slightly-decurved bill; broad tail with black edging and large white tail spots; 4 white tail spots visible in a flight shot, confirming an Audubon’s (3 or less for Myrtle’s); white undertail coverts, visible in some pics; olive-brown mantle. 2) Magnolia Warbler –grayish-blue upperparts; yellow throat; extensive yellowing on its underparts from its throat down and little past its vent; olive shoulder patch; faint, but almost complete eyering; heavy black streaking in the chest down to its lower belly and flanks; yellow rump. Overlap between the 2 species – grayish-blue upperparts; yellowing on the sides; yellow throat; yellow rump; white undertail coverts, visible in some pics; lack of a black mask in both species, suggests a female/young/drab bird; presence of olive in back; lacks the bold wingbars of a bright adult. **I also noticed that there’s a little lime-green wash on its greater coverts (?) 1140 to 1144 – I finished my loop and decided to give the NW quadrant a second look for my heart was breaking, thinking the Hybrid had left without saying ‘goodbye’. Luckily, upon my arrival to the playground (33.9096834, -117.8876815), he flew in front of me, his yellow chest, glistening in the sun!! I was ecstatic!! My Little Buddy!! He hopped around on the wet grass, digging out and munching on insects. He was aware of my presence so like I always do, I remained still and limited my movements, as he continued to come closer, and closer, and closer to me. He was no more than 10ft from me when something spooked the birds east of us, flushing them into a frenzy. Luckily, he stayed in the same general vicinity, hopping back down onto the grass to forage, mostly on his own, but within vicinity of a mixed flock of a small group of Yellow-rump Warblers, Western Bluebirds, and 1 Chipping Sparrow. I couldn’t walk away from him, so I waited for him to leave me … and when that time came, he made his way SW, mixed amongst a small flock, as he will most likely continue to break hearts along the way.
