Conservative estimate* The raft stretched from the Sagamore Bridge to the fish ladder inlet. The massive raft was extensive on both sides of the Canal. The raft built in numbers by birds drifting northeast from the Bourne end of the Canal with a strong incoming high tide. (A small portion of the raft in attached images). The rafted Eiders began drifting southwest in the Canal when the tide changed and began outgoing (around 11:00 am). The raft drifted down the Canal towards Bourne on the strong outgoing tide. We left at 11:45 am and headed down to the R R Bridge in time to watch all the rafted Eiders drifting by on the strong and swift outgoing tidal current. Most swam by in the current and a smaller number flew by. All were headed around the point across from the MMA. I located 2 hen S. m. Dresseri Common Eiders with satellite transmitters attached. Also- 2 banded hen Eiders.
