When I first saw the bird I thought it was a typical adult “Black” Brant, but the plumage seemed odd. This is because it had retained juvenile plumage characteristics in plumage of the underparts. The goose was small; similar in size to a Cackling Goose and notably smaller than Lesser Canada Goose. The head and neck were black with a prominent white necklace. The upperparts were slaty gray and unmarked. The underparts, from the breast to the legs, were dark brown and lighter than the neck except in the middle of the breast. The flanks were white edged with darker gray. From the legs through the undertail coverts the plumage was bright white and unmarked. The uppertail coverts were also white. The black of the neck ended abruptly and contrasted fairly sharply with the grayer upperparts. The wings were dark as well with thin white lines at the base and trailing edge of the secondaries. The bill, legs and feet were also black
