I missed the western tanager which had been seen in this general area, but instead found a female painted bunting: greenish in the shadow, brilliant green (especially on the head, nape, back) in the sun; chunkier, more sturdy bill than a warbler; a little smaller than a house finch. Plain face, no wingbars. Mostly feeding on the ground and seeming to sun itself in a thicket, eventually moving through that thicket feeding. Generally silent, but gave a couple of quiet call notes (literally just 2 or 3), which I might have recorded. Photos.
