Continuing rarity found by Ted G. Originally reported as likely immature male bird by both Ted, and James S., who has extensive expertise with “Old World” birds. Many reports coming through identifying bird as female- curious about what specific field marks are causing people to choose female sex. Arrived at the reservoir shortly after 8am, and having seen the bird a few days ago had less difficulty picking it out again. The TUDU was among a raft of about 46 RNDU and one GRSC. To the north of the red brick pump house were the majority of other listed water fowl, with the TUDU, RNDU and GRSC to the south (note restricted access to south side due to construction repairs). The TUDU seemed to prefer the company of the GRSC and they were together the majority of my time watching them. TUDU: significantly smaller than associating GRSC and slightly smaller than RNDU. Dark amber eye, very short feather tuft noticeable occasionally. Rich chocolate head and back, with head appearing chestnut/purple-ish in some light. Small, nearly imperceptible white mark near upper mandible. Dull gray bill. Pale, grayish flanks. Photos shortly. Nice to bump into Joe and Aaron.
