Bird seen by itself. The ID is in doubt. Initially I identified it as a Band-rumped: "compared with the other white-rumped storm-petrel frequenting these waters, Leach's S-p: this bird shows slightly heavier, hooked bill; shorter white rump band (not as long as wide) owing to the upper tail coverts being dark-tipped; shallow notch in tail." Peter Pyle reviewed the photos and identified the bird as more likely a Leach's S-P: "The bird looks better to me for a molting Leach's. It would be an SY by the worn juvenile outer primaries and the timing is right for this in LESP. Band-rumpeds molt away from Hawaiian waters and so this would be an unprecedented record for them here. The outer tail feathers appear to be dropped, giving it a more square-tailed look, and the rest of the plumage including the uppertail covert pattern is hard to evaluated due to molt." First two photos by Katie Cartee (bird flying right, pale grey sea; bird flying left and away, showing broad rump patch). Third photo by Jay Robinson. Five other photos by Sherman Wing.
