Male, photographed. Nice glossy greenish-black head with shaggy double crest. Thin orange bill. Pale rusty breast. Gray back flanked on either side by two deep black V's which were broader at the shoulder and narrowed toward the rear. Below those V's on each side was a strip of white. At the shoulder there were lots of white spots on a black background reminiscent of common loon spots. Very striking. Possibly our first male in alternate plumage in Inyo County that we have seen.
