I initially observed a small whitish bird on the water in the northwest part of Mitchell Lake between Basin 5 and Pleasanton Rd. Once I got it in the scope, I recognized it as a phalarope with a short thick bill; uniformly gray back; darker gray on the nape and “shoulders”; black area behind the eye; and a short, stocky neck. We ruled out Red-necked Phalarope based on the thick bill, the uniformly gray back and the stocky neck. Due to the distance, all I could get were poor digiscoped photos. Observed near 29.291375, -98.499227. Shannon realized that this was a Texas Bird Records Committee review species with 54 accepted records. Consultation with Eric Carpenter confirmed our ID. He also noted that this is only the 2nd wintering record for Texas, the other being in Austin (probably Hornsby) in Jan 1975. TBRC documentation completed on 1/7/2023.
