Photos from Tyler Lausten to come. I picked this bird up during a bin scan at around 5:20 pm; then, it was flying inland over Ocean View near the restroom. I immediately put the bird in the scope and my first impression was that it was a nighthawk (buoyant flight; comparatively deep, strong wingbeats; long, pointed wings). We were able to observe this bird for roughly the next 20 minutes, and though we were progressively losing daylight, the bird seemed overall warm-toned and buffy, and the primary bar considerably less overt than it is in Common Nighthawk, a species that I have seen many more of (and more recently, too) than I have Lesser Nighthawk. The primary bar also appeared closer to the wingtip than it would have on a Common Nighthawk. We were able to look at Sibley's plate of Common and Lesser nighthawks while we were observing this bird, and found Lesser Nighthawk to be a much better fit than Common... The photos (which as of the initial entry of this checklist I've only viewed back-of-camera) are about what one would expect on a fast, small bird post-sunset. However, they do support our impressions of the size and placement of the primary patch, and the photos also show wingtips that are blunter than Common Nighthawk. The photos (still BOC) were passed on to Steve Kolbe, who has considerably more experience with nighthawks than I (or, for that matter, any of us) do. He mentioned the short hand, blunt wingtips, and stubby impression to all be features supporting Lesser Nighthawk.
