Lifer, mega! I was standing atop the hill minding my own business counting birds, when a flock of house finches flew over. I looked to a shrub where I thought one had landed, where Jerald, Megan and i laid eyes on an extremely red bird that was just perched out in the open, and was certainly not a house finch. I shouted “vermilion flycatcher” on reflex, because, well, that’s what it looked like. Young male. Small bird, speckled red, brownish back, slight mask, smallish bill, upright posture, flycatching behavior. Watched for a few minutes as the bird got progressively closer to the shore (and further from us), dropped in front of another big group of birders who we shouted down to get them on the bird. i then joined the party that was observing the bird on the beach. It eventually headed north across the channel toward David Douglass park. According to the state records committee, this would be record number 6 for the state and 4 for Cape May county.
