Continuing. white cheek patch, straight thick bill, round head shape (peak not over eye as in eared grebe), body sat lower in the water with the peak of the back forward instead of peaked at the end of back like an eared grebe. Could not see the white tip of the bill even at close range. None of the other photos I have seen of this bird show this feature and make me wonder about a 1st year eared grebe. Eye was red. White on face less extensive and crisp then I expected even in close range but I don't have a lot of experience with a horned grebe. Front / top of neck had some color and was not white, a first year horned and eared can show this.. from what I have read. Found the grebe dabbling at the edge of the decker lake with a mixed group of mallards and coots on the south east side of lake. A weird behavior to see a grebe do especially one that does not tend to frequent inland lakes and ponds. It eventually moved to the north west side of the lake where I stood and started aggressively preening. giving me great views and when these photos were taken. Marked as horned grebe until further study.
