Adult in breeding plumage found at 1:30 pm on long sandbar just east of South Overlook (or Scenic Overlook on Google Maps), which is just north of (Least Tern) Nesting area (see Amigos de Bolsa Chica online map) at east end of footbridge. This long sandbar is located in the Full Tidal Basin. I turned my scope on a black-headed gull that I could just make out on sandbar behind (north of) Nesting area, and shared discovery with Rich Norton and a lady who saw us staring at gull and asked if it was a Bonaparte’s Gull. I identified the gull by its’ longer “droopy” dark red beak, narrower white eye-crescents, taller legs, and slight white primary tips compared to a Franklin Gull. Laughing has a slate-colored back, pure white belly, and extensive black on outer primaries. Franklin’s Gull has a shorter red beak, thicker white eye-crescents, shorter legs, with larger white primary tips (unless worn), has less black on outer primaries and can have a pinkish tinge on belly.
