Wow, very unexpected and a great bird up here. Started hearing calling and tapping on the trail after a small bog/pond at the end of the Southern Trail area, first detected by call and drumming, which was very different than any other woodpecker and trailed off at the end. One adult soon started calling incessantly while flying back and forth above the trail. Gave fleeting glimpses and brief views but we were able to make out a medium sized woodpecker with an all black back lacking any white spotting on the back, and some gray in the wings and a noticeably short tail and a large bill. But mostly just a solid dark backed woodpecker shape. Seen briefly but clearly heard by all. Later heard more tapping and calling from one that seemed more distant, and although the call sounded more like a Sapsucker it’s drum pattern was much more deliberate and rapid and there was no clear markings on the back and head, and we also heard this bird give more typical calls at additional times. Maybe a breeding pair as there was some good habitat around, and one individual was being quite territorial. While driving we saw a tree with flaked off bark which was a good sign and heard likely the same individual further away. Please be respectful of the area as there may be a nest site nearby for this bird. What a great encounter and an awesome Lifer!
