One individual is vocalizing and then towards the end of the audio a second individual flies in and they interact near a tall snag.
פרטי השורה
Initially one quite vocal individual high in pines in recently burned area. Then a second individual came in. One of the birds was doing an unusual fluttering/hovering flight that looked like some sort of courtship manuever. The male was holding a big larvae in its bill and presenting it prominently at the top of a snag in a way that also looked to be courtship. See photos and audio. Perhaps we'll have a breeding pair? What initially attracted my attention was the vocalization, which sounded unlike any of the common woodpeckers in the area. Then I saw the relatively large bill and concluded it was a Hairy, not a Downy. Edit: After speaking with several local bird experts, it appears that breeding Hairy Woodpeckers would be very unusual for our area (it is typically more of a winter visitor). They have suggested that I not share the specific location in this 10,000 acre preserve, so the potential breeding activity isn't disrupted. Please respect the birds and don't use playback calls during the breeding season. The interest of the birds is our first priority.
