calls and a few snippets of song from a pair of birds moving at mid-height in tall, fairly open pine forest. These calls apparently given due to my presence, though I didn't see any nest or young birds.

Exact count of birds heard and seen. One of the most common voices in the forest, and also many on the road. Seemed to be restricted to (or at least much more common) in the denser pine forest.
