When I arrived this bird was working the shoreline along the West Bank of the creek. It was walking along the sand foraging and wagging its tail. After about 20 minutes on the West Bank the bird picked up and flew to the opposite Bank. The bird’s flight style was very erratic. The bird also gave a few “tse” flight calls. The bird was then seen foraging along the rocks on the east bank for the rest of my visit. This was an overall smallish bird strikingly patterned in black, gray and white. The bird was overall quite similar in shape and behavior to a Pipit. This bird had a seemingly fairly small head in comparison to the rest of its body. With a splotchy black and gray cap, distinctive black eye-line and medium length bill that was roughly 1/3 the length of the rest of the head. This bird also had a splotchy black bib that connected to a partial collar only on the birds right side. This feature was much less distinctive on the birds left. Below this the lower breast and belly were mostly white, fading to a medium gray on the flanks. The birds wings were mostly white with a few dark splotches. There was also some black visible on the outer primaries. The mantle and scapulars were a medium gray color through the back, giving way to a mostly black tail with white edging. In flight the white edging was very striking, but much less so when walking in the ground. The tail was also quite long, maybe about 80% the length of the rest of the body. This bird was also very long legged in comparison to our Pipits.
