A Tawny Frogmouth chick on the ground - fallen from its nest. A trio (a male and two female) of the nocturnal Tawny Frogmouths (Podargus strigoides) nested for a second time the season in late December 2017 on the south side of Herdsman Lake near Perth. They hatched three chicks, one of whom fell from the nest to the grass below in mid-January 2018. We borrowed a ladder and placed the chick on the sloping branch above the nest, taking not to disturb the male and the two chicks still on the nest. We were concerned about the lonely chick on the branch and returned later that day to check on it, only to find that one of the female Frogmouths had moved next to the chick and was sheltering it under her wing. The adults continued to feed the isolated chick – it couldn’t return to the nest below because it was too difficult for it – and it doubled in size over the following few days. Elevation: 7 m. Date added to IBC: July 13, 2018.
