Common Squirrel-cuckoo perching – Pygmy Owl calling. The Common Squirrel-cuckoo (Piaya cayana)is found from eastern Mexico to southern Brazil and northern Argentina and lives in tropical forests, although it is sometimes found in eucalypt and coffee plantations. Common Squirrel-cuckoos are not parasitic, but build their own nest and raise their young. They eat mainly insects, and also take small vertebrates such as lizards, frogs, other invertebrates and occasionally small birds. This Common Squirrel-cuckoo was perched in a tree close to Karadya Birding Lodge, listening to the call of a Pygmy Owl nearby. Elevation: 400 m. Date added to IBC: February 20, 2019.
