Continuing - present for at least one week now, still only using flowers and aerial foraging for insects, NOT using feeders. Heard the call note - it was a high, clear "tyerk" - not raspy or sharp per Allen's. Rufous flanks, gorget has one spot on each lower, outer feather tract that reflects metallic orange in good light, remainder of gorget lined but colored feathers are not yet molting. Crown is grayish-green. Overall appearance is compact, wings shorter than tail, white tips to outer 3 retrices. Feeding on pineapple sage, cigar plant, and aerial insects. Subsequently, the bird landed in an Althea bush about 8 feet from me - so in effort to confirm species I played both rufous and Allen's calls. He became agitated and hovered within 4 feet of me in response to the rufous call, but had no notable reaction to the Allen's call. Not wanting to disturb the bird I did not repeat.
