Détails de l'observation
Long-tailed and red-eyed duck a little smaller than nearby Mallards and Gadwalls. The duck had reddish-orange bill with dark tip. The face had a relatively weak but complex pattern which included curved white lines bordering the cheek and an apparent dark ring around eye. The speculum feathers were blue with thin white edge. Emerging chestnut undertail coverts were observed. Together, these field marks support a male Wood Duck transitioning from non-breediing into breeding plumage. Observed on Aviara pond at intersection of Batiquitos Dr. and Kingfisher lane. Surprised to see this duck at location. This is a new arrival, as I have been regularly checking this pond throughout the year. This is the first one I have observed at my Batiquitos/Aviara patch.
