NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 23. Bulk reel: 239 a) 4:40 AM. Rain during night; fair now, moon. The first part of this recording was obtained incidentally while working on Crypturellus erythropus. In the pre-dawn period the female was singing in the distance and the male in his usual area, both using two-figure phrases although the voice of the male "yodeled," but then became normal. Quality: 2. Level: +3. 7.5 ips. Std. Parabola not focusesd. The focus was then changed toward the female, then changed to the male. Quality: 2. Level: +3. b) 10:55 AM. Cloudy fair; rained during AM. Two-figure song by the male, who has been singing most of the AM. The higher-voiced bird, presumed female, was also singing periodically from across the field +/- where first encountered 15/VI; some recording made focused on that bird. Quality: 1-2, 2, 1. Level: 0. 203 tape. 3 3/4 ips, 3 3/4 ips, and 7.5. Low noise. Notes subsequent to Cut 23) Note made 5:35 AM, 19/VI/73: The Tapera (heard in first part of Cut 7c of Coryphospingus) had been singing continuously for at least 1 1/2 hours. 19/VI/73: Female and male again singing typical duet: the female sometimes used only a single prolonged note instead of the normal two, so far as I could hear. Before this, two birds were heard to sing multi-figure phrases and it seemed that one of these is the bird that subsequently gave the female portion of the duet, but I couldn't determine that without certainty.
