South Polar Skua (Stercorarius maccormicki) - 1993-08-14 - Oregon Inlet Pelagic--Gulf Stream, Dare County, North Carolina - scan of 35mm 4x6" print
Détails de l'observation
Shortly before we were ready to head back in, we had the "best" bird of the day. Deuane Hoffman was sitting on the bow and yelled "What's that dark bird on the water?. Its a Skua! A SOUTH POLAR SKUA!!". The skua was feeding on the carcass of a BLACK-CAPPED PETREL so it stayed near its meal. It was sitting on the water as we approached, but it got up and flew around a bit before returning to the petrel. We had a fantastic look and got several good pictures of the skua both in flight and on the water.
