Heard the welcome tap-tap-tap as he drilled into and pried bark off of an old deciduous tree to feed. Bold black and white, white spots on black lower (outer) part of wings. Some red on head. Long beak. Worked his way acrobatically up and down thick branches, leaving exposed inner bark as evidence of his presence. After about an hour he took refuge in a thick group of branches and performed his grooming ritual.
