Spectabilis, indeed -- it brings a much needed touch if elegance, even royalty, and plain old 'spectability to the masses of mere Common Coots it associates with. But I don't judge its chosen associates. Continuing bird, surviving the first day of duck hunting season. Larger, golden brown bird with more substantial bill than usual ducks expected in the area. Paler eye ring with slight tear drop shape, pointing back. Head seemed slightly lighter with darker cap, and darker brown body.
