Bird was 30m to east of bridge, in the open.
Détails de l'observation
Six in flight over marsh, two calling near bridge. First time observing the 'glug-a-glug' call being made. Bill snaps at start seem to be partial inflation of an air pouch along neck. The first 'glug' is bill horizontal, mouth opens and then the glug is heard as a gulp of air is forced into pouch. Second glug is a reach up with bill then a snap downward, as the air pouch is forced up and out in a piston-like manner. It looks to be a strenuous effort - muscles up and down throat/pouch are in hard use. The bird appears to tire as a call progresses.
