Détails de l'observation
Heard and briefly seen. I’m familiar with NOPA from out east, so stopped in my tracks when I heard parula's signature variant rising buzzy song with that sharp final note—zeea zeea zeea zeeee tsup—up above my head in trees near creek. Tried to get visual, but was only able to obtain poor audio. My wife said she thinks she saw the bird while I was fiddling with my phone, noting distinct yellow underside as he flew from one tree bough to another. Located along rocky creekside path on first segment of Gabrieleno Trail, walking to falls after trailhead at parking lot, a ten min slow walk after picnic area; amid dense foliage and tree cover, gurgling creek; oak titmouse, yellow warbler, bushtit, warbling vireo in vicinity. Changed from NOPA to Tropical Parula when eBird reviewer Chris Dean reached out, I sent further location details, and other birders re-found parula and determined it was Setophaga pitiayumi. Apparently, very rare for county (2nd county record, 3rd state record).
