Détails de l'observation
Heard only. Extremely loud and harsh screech heard twice, first in the distance from a wet gully and then 2 minutes later from tall eucalypts bordering Bungonia Creek. Identified as masked owl based on the harshness of the screeches, habitat of tall eucaluptus forest bordering a waterway and several previous records from the area. Unfortunately because of the nature of the situation (during a school camp) I was unable to go off in search of the bird. Potential confusion species were eliminated as follows: Barn owl: habitat of old-growth wet forest wrong for this species Red fox: screech much harsher and with less intonation than the scream of a fox Brushtail possum: screech harsher, lower and with less intonation than possum growls and squeals Sooty owl: screech call very rare for this species, and less harsh See habitat photo of the trees that the owl was calling from.
