Détails de l'observation
*** Very rare. First spotted by Vikas (Fantastic pick!) circling over the Wilson Bridge that we watched through the scope for roughly ~5 minutes. Appeared to be an adult bird. Very distant, but it was clearly a pelican. Massive bird with large wings, a huge bill, and a short tail + no trailing legs. The bill was very prominent. The bird was always against the overcast sky, although it never looked white or even pale. The back appeared to be a uniform slaty gray and the tips of the wings were darker, but there was not extensive, contrasting black primaries/secondaries as would be expected on an AWPE. The wings, while broad, did not have the massive bulging secondaries or the distinct 'fingered' appearance that would be expected on an AWPE. When circling, it almost even looked like the nape was lighter colored than the body, although it was difficult to tell given the distance. I took photos and video through the scope, although they are distant.
