Détails de l'observation
The bird was well seen in front of the house. It would also fly to a property south of the steakout that was well stocked with suets and other feeders. The bird was observed bringing food over from this location and would cache the food in various trees by beating the food into crevices. I also observed it taking food from an old nest where it must have been caching it. The bird was territorial over the steakout area and would regularly chase out Red-bellied Woodpeckers when they flew in. It did not chase away Hairy or Downy Woodpeckers. The bird was large for a woodpecker, but not as big as a Pileated. It had a dark head with dark eye, red eyeline-like feature, grayish bill, grey neck which wrapped around its head creating a gray nape, pinkish breast coloration, most of the remaining upper backside was as dark iridescent green color. The tail had four? stiff feathers that anchored the bird against the tree, typical of most woodpeckers.
