Détails de l'observation
Finally got a good look at a sapsucker along Wenas Creek above the campground. Seen by all birders in the group, giving pretty good views at fairly close range for about two minutes. Frustratingly, the bird appears to be a hybrid based on several field marks - a few red feathers bleeding into its black breast band, plus a red spot visible on the side of its face in between its white facial stripes. Impressions of the bird's crown vary in different photos - some show a bit of reddish wash connecting the red nape spot to its red forehead/crown patch, others hint at solid black separation. Funnily enough, this bird appears almost identical to the sapsucker hybrid I saw at Evans Creek Preserve on the westside last year. Have to wonder what the genetic makeup of this bird is, maybe 90% Red-naped, 10% Red-breasted? This bird being a likely hybrid means that I was unable to get a visual on a confirmed pure Red-naped Sapsucker at the campground this year. Why is Red-naped such a big nemesis for me?
