Cassia crossbill identified by Tim Spahr from the Finch Research Network. Some type 2 calls also appear on the clip.
Détails de l'observation
At least one identified clearly in an audio spectrogram from a recording. Not identified visually: Although I saw a number of type 2 and type 5 crossbills, I'm not sure I saw the Cassia on these recordings. Evidently it was mixed in with flocks of the other types as they flew around. The calls consist of two parts that were produced very quickly one after the other: the first rises rapidly at the start and then drops sharply. The second one starts at a higher frequency and then also drops very rapidly so that parts of the two calls appear approximately parallel. The first figure below (ML610755739) shows some conspicuous Cassia crossbill flight calls. The first audio file below (ML610755822) plays those calls shown in ML610755739 and many others, including calls from types 2 and 5. The second audio file (ML610798388) was obtained 11 minutes after the first and has more Cassia flight calls. The second figure (ML610799090) shows enlarged views of some calls from the recording in ML610798388 so their structure is more visible. Confirmed by Tim Spahr from the Finch Research Network. Tim compared flight calls from the audio files below against known Cassia crossbill examples obtained by multiple observers in the South Hills of Idaho.
