Détails de l'observation
Apparently a lost racing pigeon. Light green band numbered "6216" on left leg. Looked pretty similar to a normal wild-type feral Rock Pigeon, but maybe a bit sleeker, and with some longer crown feathers. Foraging tamely on the ground at the Washington Heights entrance by Burnham House. It let me walk right up to it and probably would have let me pick it up. Hopefully it finds its way back to its owner, or at least to a good home—if Palomacy (https://www.pigeonrescue.org) is to be believed, a racing pigeon owner may kill a bird that gets lost. Addendum 6 October 2023: I just added these photos, two of which I took with my phone at close range. I'm taking the unusual step of flagging my own record not because the ID is wrong, but because I believe that per eBird guidelines, this record should be marked as an escapee.
