The Baker Atheltics Complex football field was lit up and disrupted the Chimney Swifts' behavior as they were settling in to roost on September 30th, 2023. I believe there was a rugby match scheduled but I couldn't find anything about this online.
Détails de l'observation
The Chimney Swift roost at 65 Park Terrace West was viewed from north of the West 218th Street and Park Terrace West intersection and east of the main entrance to the Baker Athletics Complex. From here, the chimney is in full view. 🔍 The football field was lit up for a night game. The light pollution altered the swifts' behavior. A large percentage of the birds exited after entering the roost only to re-enter later on. Entrances and exits continued until the last minute I remained at the count which was 40 minutes after sunset. The area was so well-lit that I was able to make out the mortar lines on the chimney right through to the end of the count which is unusual. ❏ Seventy-three (73) swifts were observed entering the roost during the count. I counted the swifts using binoculars mounted on a monopod. The first swift entered the roost during the 12th minute after sunset, and the last entry was during the 36th minute after sunset. The highest number of swifts seen simultaneously in flight was twenty (20+) seen during the 18th minute after sunset but since my field of view is reduced when viewing through monopod-mounted binoculars the in-flight totals are underrepresented. Sunset on September 30th is at 6:40p (1840) [based on NOAA's Map]: • -10' before SS (+0) • +10' after SS (+0) • +20' after SS (+30): 1852, 1856 (3), 1857 (3), 1859 (23) • +30' after SS (+3): 1905 (2), 1906 • +36' after SS (+40): 1911, 1912 (5), 1913 (28), 1915 (5), 1916 TOTAL = 73 with 41 exiting the roost A total of forty-one (41) swifts were seen exiting the chimney with the 1st during the 20th minute after sunset and the last four (4) during the 36th minute after sunset. A total of thirty-two (32) appear to be occupying the chimney by the end of the count. The highest number of entries per minute occurred during the 19th, and 33rd minutes after sunset, with 23, and 28 entries respectively. The count started at 1830.0 (10.0 min. before sunset) and ended 50 minutes later at 1920.0 (40.0 min. after sunset).
