Détails de l'observation
Odd looking heron that has been at Spittal for a few days at least now(originally seen by AW over a week ago but put down as a GB). ID was brought into question by several birders - was seen by PW, MM and others yesterday but was thought to be a GB heron. Went to Spittal and saw the bird myself today and noticed it was a shorter looking bird with all grey plumage - no rusty brown anywhere on it. Upper legs were white instead of rusty or dark colored, and front of bird was white as well. Neck was white on the front bordered by defined 2 black lines that go all the way down to its chest. Head of bird does not have any distinct markings as it looks to be a subadult. Watched it hunting for a few minutes and it kept its neck tucked in a lot, rather than stretched out, and over all it appeared shorter and less bended than a great blue. Can’t download photos right now so back of camera pics atm for ID. Will be replaced with actual pics once I can download again.
