Détails de l'observation
Continuing hybrid male Pine Siskin x American Goldfinch with nicely intermediate characteristics between the two parent species. First reported by the homeowner, Anne Brown, on May 21st. Visited the front porch feeders once during our visit and was associating with 2+ American Goldfinches. Immediate impression was an unusually pale goldfinch but with a reduced black crown patch, thin brownish streaking on center of back and undersides, thin/pointy pale-colored bill, very black wings with white edging to primaries, and narrow black tail. Overall almost exactly what you'd expect a male of this hybrid pairing to look like. We may have heard it do a few 'potato chip' calls as it left the feeder, but not entirely sure. This is the 9th eBird record for this combo, with 8 records down the East Coast from coastal Canada to Maryland and 1 West Coast record from Victoria, British Columbia. There are no previous Maine records. Big thanks to Anne Brown for getting the word out and allowing access into her yard to view this rarity, especially after just hosting the Harris’s Sparrow for most of the winter/spring!
