Male tick call while foraging nearby a few nests
Détails de l'observation
Returned to same location as two days ago to spend more time observing the weavers. This time confirmed breeding by locating nests being built by males and observed male displaying to female, using a nest in his display. Also recorded first audio of the species for the Macaulay Library, with a song, call, and courtship display! Nests: compact, round, woven balls, with an entrance on one lower corner. Diameter approximately 10-15cm. At the end of lower branches from a bush, at a height of about 2m, just above the height of the nearby grass and reeds. Four built in the same bush, about a foot apart from each other on separate branches. One nest with a couple of fresh green grass stalks woven into the outside, unlike the others which were only dried material. Courtship: male and female flew into low bush adjacent to bush with four nests. Perched about half a metre apart, the male began calling rapidly, as well as fluffing body feathers and lowering his wings while stretching them out to the side. After 10s the male flew over to the nest with green grass stalks and hung upside down while doing a classic weaver display pose, with wings and tail stretched out and fluttering while calling. The female then flew off, followed by the male.
