Audio file 01 was taken shortly after I first heard them while walking past pond. Nearer the coast I would have passed this off as Ridgway's without much further thought. But I am unaware of records in the 4S ranch area (lake Hodges??) so stopped and listened to my recording with the idea that perhaps it was an unusual Virginia rail vocal. This playback really set them off and the reaction is what you hear in files 02 and 03. 02 was recorded on Merlin which didn't know what to make of it. 03 was recorded using the voice memos app.
Détails de l'observation
Tentative ID to alert to possible new location(?) for the species but based solely on calls. Distinct clapper rail kek and other calls, from at least two birds, heard in riparian pond here: 33.0037051, -117.1307809. Calls pretty distinctive and from rail-suitable habitat (although freshwater habitat typically less suitable for Ridgway’s clapper). Audio file 01 was taken shortly after I first heard them while walking past pond. Nearer the coast I would have passed this off as Ridgway's without much further thought. But the species is rarely recorded this far inland (two other ebird records from nearby: Campania Ave 2022 and Santa Fe Valley Trail 2022) so I stopped and listened to my recording with the idea that perhaps it was an unusual Virginia rail vocalization. This ‘self-playback’ really set them off and the reaction is what you hear in files 02 and 03. 02 was recorded on Merlin which didn't know what to make of it. 03 was recorded using the voice memos app.
