Détails de l'observation
1st summer ‘pikei’ plumaged bird, located at the mouth of Campbell Creek. Spent majority of time flying (into ~15mph winds) and repeatedly diving / picking along the tide edge. Noticeably smaller and flappier than nearby ARTE. Photos by J.Verbrugge/B.Scher show extension of gray mantle through rump and tail. Characteristic also possible in LITE, but photo review (Macaulay Library, Australia, Sep-Mar) seems to suggest extent of gray in rump/tail + advanced state of first summer plumage is out of bounds for East Asia Little Tern. But appreciate bird may not be 100% identifiable without recordings. Recent smattering of vagrant 'prairie' birds in AK and Yukon, CA (i.e.,Thick-billed Longspur, Mississippi Kite, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Chestnut-collared Longspur) suggests individual may have originated in central N America / lower 48.
