Townsend's Storm-Petrel, Trough north of Crespi Knoll, CA - 5 Aug 2022
Détails de l'observation
Potential first Orange County record of Townsend's and the first of two we found today. Concerns have been raised about the identification by people who were not on the boat, so we are entering it this way until more photos can be added and evaluated. This was a dusky-rumped individual while the latter was a white-rumped bird in the next hour's checklist. This bird flew in to the bow and was feeding erratically for a minute or two before moving off. The flight style was immediately recognizable as a Townsend's Storm-Petrel. Fluttery flight, often bouncing upward and then dropping to the water with occasional foot-pattering while feeding. This bird had a uniformly dusky colored rump, pale carpal bars, bluntly pointed wings, notched tail, contrastingly gray head against a browner back, and fine bill. More compact than a Chapman's Leach's with more rounded wings. The uniformly dusky rump is more typical of Townsend's based on Pereksta's observations off southern California. Chapman's Leach's rarely if ever show such a uniform rump; typically they are paler along the edges which then blend into the rest of the rump. Townsend's sometimes have lighter edges, but they often contrast sharply against the outer edge of the uppertail coverts. The uniform duskiness gives the rump a blocky appearance when the tail is not spread (see ML473729371)
