Edit: Best described as a possible CAGU x HERG hybrid or backcross. Close photos of same individual on July 28 revealed an orange orbital ring and gape, distinct and probably intermediate iris (detailed description on July 28 list). Photos and videos from this date show the bird at an earlier stage in its molt cycle, giving a better look at the CAGU-like wingtip pattern. Adult bird in breeding aspect. First noticed the yellow legs, which weren’t obviously shorter, and dark eye. Open wing showed more solid dark in wingtip compared to HERG (especially p7-p6) with straighter border and more clear cut on underwing. Head noticeably smaller, overall smaller. Upperparts “different” color-wise, not obviously darker all the time. p5 shed, p4(?) maybe can see growing in. Bill lacking any hint of dark band which can happen in summer CAGU. Can make out reddish orbital ring in photos. Was frequently harassed by HERG, which is a good indication it is smaller and different.
