Détails de l'observation
Photos studied by Kevin Spencer and comparison made to other small owls of the area. Here are his comments: Going with size, small owls would include Northern Pygmy Owl, NOPO, Northern Saw-whet Owl, NSWO, and Western Screech Owl, WESO. In comparing the vent areas of all three owl, it appears that NOPO is intermediate in streaking, with NSWO having none or close to none, and WESO being quite busy with plumage markings. Your photos show some well spaced coarse streaks that are consistent with NOPO streaking in their ventral area. Then the length of tail is very long for NOPO. I'd say the tail appears longer than the primary tip. And that's another supporting thought. NOPO has a more pointed wing and so the outer-most primary would look to be by itself as it does in the photos. The other two small owls have rounded tips of the wings and would appear to have several nearly even-length feathers, which the photos don't seem to show.
