juvenile Semipalmated Sandpiper, Old Creek Lagoon, Cayucos, San Luis Obispo County, California, 30 Aug 2006, Tom M. Edell
Détails de l'observation
I parked on the south side of the creek mouth at the end of Studio Drive. After an initial look through the larger wading birds, gulls and terns I saw a single small peep feeding along the edge of the lagoon that alternated between in and out of the waters edge and primarily picked food from the sand and water with an occasional shallow probe. I immediately recognized the bird as a juvenile Semipalmated Sandpiper. I could clearly see that the feet were semipalmated, the bill was relatively short and stout, and the white chin through under tail except for a small brownish intrusion onto the upper breast at the shoulders. The wings and back feathers were pale edged but slightly buffy in the back and on the primaries, and the scapulars were dark centered. The lores and supercillium were pale with the area in between brown, and a dark line extended between the eye and bill. The cap was brown with fine dark streaking and the nape was brown. I managed to digiscope a few photos while watching the bird.
