Recording of at least three birds at roost, prior to departure. Last 9 calls are those of birds calling as they left the roost. The preceding calls were all given over a 6min, 19s period, but the intervals between successive calls have been reduced to make a easier-to-listen-to recording. Other than the first three calls, given at 1:27.3, 2:3.3 and 3:45.5 minutes into the recording, the average interval between the subsequent 13 pre-departure calls calls was 13.7s (SD +/- 6.8 s). A fourth bird can occasionally be heard calling very faintly from much further away. Some low frequency yapping calls ("ugh-ugh-ugh") can also be heard towards the end of the pre-departure calling sequence. The average interval between the departure calls was 0.8 s (SD +/- 0.2 s). The constant background noise at just under 4 kH is the sound of the Makirikiri Stream. Some traffic noise (passing vehicles on nearby state highway also in the sequence, especially at the point of departure of the birds from the roost). Recording started at 21:13:51 NZST
Détails de l'observation
At least 3 birds calling from poplars along Makirikiri Stream, opposite cafe. One of these had been seen earlier in the same area. These birds left at 21:20, at least one bird flying upstream rather than down to Whanganui R. Much calling in the preceding 5 minutes (listen to recording). A fourth bird heard calling (faintly) from the Whanganui riverside at the same time as the three birds were calling from the poplars.
