Little Gull, Salt Creek, Salton Sea, CA 4/23/16
Détails de l'observation
Found by Jackie Catino around 10:15 AM. The bird flew in from the south and landed on adjacent to one of the small ponds of water that are near the sea shoreline. This location is northwest of the parking lot area. The bird was seen near a few Bonaparte's Gulls, allowing for a good comparison. At a distance of about 75 feet, we observed the bird for about 10 minutes as it preened. It then did a short flight up to the top of the berm adjacent to the sea shoreline, stood there for a couple of minutes and then flew off by itself towards the west over the sea. Slightly smaller than nearby Bonaparte's Gulls. The bird had an all dark head, and without any white eye arcs. Small dark bill. Pale gray above and white below. The trailing edge of the wings were white at the tips. The wing linings were all dark, and easily seen when the bird spread its wings while preening and in flight. The tail was all white. The legs and feet were a dark reddish/orange color. The bird was silent. Several photos attached.
