Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, juvenile, Morro Bay Estuary, San Luis Obispo County, California, 19 Oct 2020, Tom M. Edell
Détails de l'observation
After watching the location this bird was seen at yesterday for several hours, it finally appeared as the tide dropped but was only present for about ten minutes. It arrived as the dowitcher numbers were building, bathed, did some light preening, and active feeding before flying off into the estuary. Tom Slater first noticed the bird in a group of shorebirds we had all been scanning for a while; no one had seen it arrive. It stood out because of its relatively small size, buffy wash across the breast, and dark rusty red cap and because it was smaller than the nearby dowitchers and larger than the nearby Least Sandpipers. On closer inspection the distinct pale supercilium, rusty line through the eye, dark streaks at the shoulder, and buffy fringed wing and flight feathers stood out. The legs were yellow, and the bill was dark with a pale base and a slight droop. (photos)
